Active and Passive Voices
सक्रीय एवम् निष्क्रिय स्वर

Please observe the two sentences below...
नीचे दिये दो वाक्यों पर गौर करें...
1. Kohli plays cricket.
2. Cricket is played by Kohli.
The general meaning of both these sentences is same. The main difference in both is that the subject and the object have been transposed.
दोनों वाक्यों का सामान्यत अर्थ एक ही है. इन दोनों में मुख्य अंतर यह है कि कर्ता और कारक में जिन शब्दों का उपयोग हुआ है उन्हें आपस में बदला, स्थानांत्रित किया, गया है.

One other difference is the change in the form of the verb.
एक अन्य अंतर यह है - क्रिया के रूप में परिवर्तन.

These are the two voices, namely the Active Voice and the Passive Voice.
ये एक वाक्य के दो स्वर - सक्रीय स्वर एवम् निष्क्रिय स्वर.

Active Voice सक्रीय स्वर

A sentence is said to be in the Active Voice when the subject is something active - the one that is performing the activity.
जब वाक्य में प्रयुक्त होने वाला कर्ता एक सक्रीय भूमिका में होता है तब वह वाक्य सक्रीय स्वर का कहलाता है.

In the first sentence, the subject is the one that performing the activity indicated in the verb.
ऊपर के पहले वाक्य में कर्ता (Kohli), क्रीया द्वारा दर्शाये गये कार्य (play) की, सक्रीय भूमिका में है.

Examples...
Radha took some pictures.
My grandfather planted this tree.
You must shut the door.

Passive Voice निष्क्रीय स्वर

While, in the second sentence the subject is the one on which the activity is performed by the object.
वहीं, दूसरे वाक्रय में, कर्ता एक निष्क्रिय भूमिका में है और क्रिया में दिखाया गया कार्य कारक के द्वारा किया जा रहा है.

A sentence is said to be in the Passive Voice when the subject is something passive - the one upon which the activity is being performed.
जब वाक्य में प्रयुक्त होने वाला कर्ता एक निष्क्रिय भूमिका में होता है तब वह वाक्य निष्क्रिय स्वर का कहलाता

Some pictures were taken by Radha.
This tree was planted by my grandfather.
The door must be shut by you.


To effectively deliver the message, it is important that we know not only how to change the voice of sentence but also when to use the active voice and when to use the passive voice.
संदेश को प्रभावशाली ढंग से पेश करने के लिये यह आवश्यक है कि हमें पता हो कि कैसे वाक्य के वाच्य को बदला जा सकता है. साथ ही यह भी उतना ही महत्व पूर्ण है कि हमें पता हो कि कब active voice और कब passive voice का प्रयोग करना है.

Using the proper voice allows us to set focus on the active and the passive nouns as required. The noun which is the topic or subject in the discussion is used as the subject of the sentences.
सही स्वर की मदद से हम चर्चा का ध्यान सक्रीय या निष्क्रिय संज्ञाओं पर केन्द्रित किया जा सकता है. जब संज्ञा चर्चा का विषय हो तब उसे वाक्य में कर्ता के स्थान पर उपयोग किया जाता है.

The active voice is used when the doer of the action is to be given more prominence, whereas passive voice is used when the person or thing on which the action is being performed is to be highlighted.
Active voice का प्रयोग उस समय किया जाता है जब कार्य करने वाले को अहमियत देना होता है और वहीं passive voice का उपयोग उस समय किया जाता है जब महत्व उसे दिया जाता है जिस पर काम का प्रभाव पड़ता है.
